Empathic Agents to Reduce User Frustration
نویسنده
چکیده
There is now growing interest in the development of computer systems which respond to users‟ emotion and affect. We report three small scale studies (with a total of 42 participants) which investigate the extent to which affective agents, using strategies derived from human-human interaction, can reduce user frustration within humancomputer interaction. The results confirm the previous findings of Klein et al (2002) that such interventions can be effective. We also obtained results that suggest that embodied agents can be more effective at reducing frustration than non-embodied agents, and that female embodied agents may be more effective than male embodied agents. These results are discussed in light of the existing research literature.

Am I bovvered?: Fifteen years of Empathic Agents
In 2001, the EU-funded project VICTEC pioneered the concept of an Empathic Agent. This was reported at AAMAS in 2004 in a well-cited paper ‘Caring for Agents and Agents that Care: Building Empathic Relations with Synthetic Agents’ (Paiva, Dias, Sobral, Aylett, Sobreperez, Woods, Zoll, Hall). It advanced two goals for embodied empathic agents: characters that, by their actions and behaviours, ar...
متن کاملThe Importance of Similarity in Empathic Interaction
Empathy has been defined as, “An observer reacting emotionally because he perceives that another is experiencing or about to experience an emotion” (Stotland, Mathews, Sherman, Hannson, & Richardson, 1978). Synthetic characters (computer generated semi-autonomous agents corporeally embodied using multimedia and/or robotics, see Figure 1) are becoming increasingly widespread as a way to establis...
متن کاملLook on the Bright Side: A Model of Cognitive Change in Virtual Agents
The modelling of empathic reactions in virtual agents has been recognised as a key aspect to improve agent-user relationship. Empathy is particularly important in a virtual agent used in computer-based psychotherapy applications. From a clinical perspective, it is more useful to produce therapeutic-empathy responses in the agent and not only natural empathic reactions as response to patient’s i...
متن کاملAdapting Empathic Agents to User Experiences
In this paper we provide a theoretical contribution to the area of experience design in the field of human-agent interaction. Our research focuses on the question which (emotional) processes lead to people’s behavior of seeking or avoiding interaction with interface agents. A main startingpoint for this research is the model for Perceiving and Experiencing Fictional Characters (PEFiC). It expla...
متن کاملRecognizing, Modeling, and Responding to Users' Affective States
We describe a system that recognizes physiological data of users in real-time, interprets this information as affective states, and responds to affect by employing an animated agent. The agent assumes the role of an Empathic Companion in a virtual job interview scenario where it accompanies a human interviewee. While previously obtained results with the companion with were not significant, the ...
